Fall 2020 Traditional BSN APPLICATION - UM-Flint Nursing Program

Important Information

READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR APPLICATION.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. To avoid delay, please complete in full.

DEADLINE
  • This application is due by 5:00 pm on Friday, 01/17/2020. Late submissions will not be accepted.
TRANSCRIPTS
  • DO NOT SEND OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS TO THE SCHOOL OF NURSING.
  • Send Official transcripts from each institution that you have attended (with the exception of UM-Flint) to the UM-Flint Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

PREREQUISITES
  • FOUR prerequisites (at least two must be science courses, one of which must be a biology course) must be completed by the deadline date to apply to the Nursing program. You must be enrolled in the remaining prerequisite courses in Fall 2019, Winter 2020, Spring 2020, or Summer 2020, since all prerequisites must be completed before beginning the Nursing core curriculum in Fall 2020.
  • A minimum grade of a C+ (2.3) is required for prerequisite courses. The exception is chemistry; a grade of C (2.0) is acceptable in chemistry.
  • Biology credits must be no more than ten years old (BIO 135, 167, 168). A competency exam may be completed through the School of Nursing if completed more than ten years ago. Cost is $80/exam (A&P and Microbiology).  Note:  If Anatomy & Physiology coursework is completed more than ten years ago, but Pathophysiology (NSC 207 or equivalent) is successfully completed within ten years, A&P coursework does not have to be repeated.
  • Pathophysiology (NSC 207) and Pharmacology (NSC 233) credits must be no more than ten years old.
REFERENCES
  • Two professional references are required.
  • Up to three professional references may be submitted.
  • At least one reference must be from a faculty member/instructor
  • Email the following link to your reference-writer and ask them to submit the form electronically: https://formassembly.umflint.edu/6043
GRADE POINT
  • A minimum college grade point average of a 2.75 is required in both your cumulative prerequisite GPA and your last 30 credits to be considered for selection. Having the minimum GPA does not guarantee admission. Admission is competitive. Due to the number of qualified applicants within the applicant pool, it is likely that the prerequisite GPA and overall (last 30 credits) GPA of accepted students will be well above minimum requirements. The School of Nursing may find it necessary to deny admission to a qualified applicant due to enrollment limits.
LAST 30 CREDITS GPA
  • You will need to calculate your Last 30 Credits GPA on this application.
  • In order to do so, you will need to have access to your most recent college transcripts going back at least 30 credit hours from your most recently completed college coursework.
  • You must input course grades and credits for each of your courses starting from your most recent completed semester and going back semester-by-semester until you reach 30 credits or more.
  • More information on calculating your Last 30 Credits GPA will be provided in the Last 30 Credits GPA section below.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY (NSC 207)
  • If you are enrolled in Pathophysiology (NSC 207) in the Winter 2020 semester, your midterm grade will be considered for this application process. Grades for students enrolled at UM-Flint will automatically be reviewed.
  • If you are completing an NSC 207 equivalent course in Winter 2020 at another institution, please submit official documentation of your midterm grade by Friday, February, 14, 2020 via email to:  UMFlintNursingApplication@umich.edu.
REAPPLICATION
  • The School of Nursing does not keep a waitlist. If you reapply for admission, a new application is required.
NOTIFICATION LETTERS
  • Decisions will be sent to UM-Flint email ONLY in March 2020.

Total University Credits

Last 30 Credits GPA
You must input course grades and credits for each of your courses starting with your most recent completed semester and going back semester-by-semester until you reach 30 credits or more.
  • The final semester you need to calculate is the semester during which you reach 30 or more credits.
  • You must enter all grades received during each semester that you input.
  • If you attended multiple institutions in a single semester, you must input grades for each institution by clicking on "add another semester" for each institution.
  • If you attended more than one institution in the final semester that brings you to 30 or more credits, then you must click on "add another semester" for each institution and input all course grades taken at each institution (even if it brings you well beyond 30 credits).
  • You must only input courses for which you have received grades that can be converted to numerical grade points.
  • Do not input courses for which you received an Incomplete or a Pass/Fail.
  • A note on Grade Replacement: Do not input courses that you later repeated for grade replacement. There will very likely be an "excluded" next to courses to indicate that the initial grade has been replaced.
  • A running total of your credits will be automatically calculated for you as you fill in your semester coursework and is located in the section labeled Last 30 GPA Calculations
  • Your Last 30 Credits GPA will be automatically calculated as you fill in your semester coursework and is also located in the section labeled Last 30 GPA Calculations
Grade Points
If your institution uses numerical grades on its transcript, then use those numeric values when inputting your course grades. If your institution issues letter grades on its transcript, you will need to convert them to numerical grade points using the following grade-point system:

LAST 30 GPA Calculations

Traditional BSN Prerequisites:
Your Biology (BIO 135, BIO 167, BIO 168), Pathophysiology (NSC 207), & Pharmacology (NSC 233) courses can be no older than ten years from January 2020
BIO 135, BIO 167, BIO 168, NSC 207, and NSC 233 coursework completed prior to January 2010 is too old and will not satisfy program prerequisites.

UM-Flint Transfer Database:
https://transfer.umflint.edu. Your courses must transfer as the equivalent to UM-Flint's prerequisite courses. If they do not transfer as equivalent courses, they will not be counted for the nursing application. Please be sure to check the equivalency database or review your transcript analysis in your Student Information System (SIS) account.

A minimum grade of a C+ (2.3) is required for prerequisite courses. The exception is chemistry; a grade of C (2.0) is acceptable in chemistry.

# of Repeats:
  • If you repeated a course, indicate how many times you repeated the course under the # of Repeats header. If you withdrew from a course and received a W, it does not count as an attempt. For the purposes of this application, if you withdrew from a course and then took it again, you have not repeated the course and would input zero repeats for that course.
  • A course is only considered repeated if you already earned a grade for the course previously. Each successive grade earned is considered a repeat. If you attempted the class only once, then you will input zero repeats. If you attempted a course two times and earned two successive grades, then you will input one repeat. If you attempted a course three times and earned three successive grades, then you will input two repeats...etc.
  • Indicate ONLY the most recent grade of record for repeated courses.
A note on course credits:
Course credits will be automatically standardized in order to ensure that the methodology for calculating GPAs is equivalent for all applicants.
Standardized course credits are as follows:
BIO 135, BIO 167, BIO 168 (4 credits)
ENG 111, ENG 112, NSC 178, NSC 207, NSC 209, NSC 233, NUR 308, PSY 313, CHM Lecture (3 credits)
NUR 110 (2 credits)
CHM lab (1 credit)

Grade Points
If your institution uses numerical grades on its transcript, then use those values when inputting your course grades. If your institution issues letter grades on its transcript, you will need to convert them to numerical grade points using the following grade-point system:

To do so, multiply your Micro Lec grade by 3. Multiply your Micro Lab grade by 1. Add those numbers then divide by 4.
Input the total number of times that you have repeated this course. A withdrawal does not count as an attempt and should not be counted when calculating the number of repeats. If you re-took a course that you have already earned a grade for, then you repeated that course.
